Hydro Rates - Time Of Use Periods Changing To Winter Times

Hydro One users were notified on their latest billing
Winter time of use periods will come into effect November First .

Looking at our hydro consumption for the period mid September to mid October
We Consumed (adjusted for line loss) 1000 Kwh

The Chart below looks at the breakdown of our time of use charges.
At this time of year the changes make little difference to your bill as your
hydro consumption during the peak and mid peak times is relatively balanced.

Watch Out For Those Winter Months

However Back In mid February to mid March when we were on the
winter time of Use schedule our consumption was different and greater.

Cost of Consumption Jumps

Bearing in mind that the month before (mid January to mid February)
we were on a rate based on simple consumption not time of use consumption at the
Rate of $.064 for the first 1000 kWh and $.074 over 1000 kWh

This particular bill would only have been $76.95

And Jumps Again

The Switch to time of use coupled with rate increases has caused this
cost of consumption to rise from $76.95 to
$88.46 for a winter month and $90.67 for a summer month based on todays rates

A 14.96% and 17.83% increase respectivly

Annual Increase Goes Through The Roof

And this does not include delivery, regulatory and debt retirement charges or HST
which more than double the total cost at that time

Bringing the actual total at the time of $79.06
(based on the rate at the time) to $189.54 or $170.59
(after a 10% Ontario Clean Air Credit reduction)

Note some figures may vary slightly from originals due to rounding

Comments

Ugh, it's I'm glad you had the fortitude to actually analyse your hydro bill. I hate to even look at mine, especially with all the complicated formulas and rates on them. Solar and wind options are looking better and better all the time.

Malcolm - Barrie is the one that does this sort of thing he has our hydro consumption going back many years he has graphed all kinds of things from it including the differences based on the number or age of people in a household (we had at one point 4 generations living in or home.)
